So… this post was going to be about MY favourite Bible verses; or rather, the ones God uses the most to speak to me. However, as I pondered how I would write it I felt His prompting to make it focus on what He wants us all to know about Him (and ourselves!).
1. He loves you!
The Bible is often described as God’s love letter to us. How beautiful! God inspired 40 different people to pen the ‘letters’ included in His word. The amazing thing is that, despite being written by a variety of people, each with different occupations and contexts, they communicate a consistent message: God is love AND God loves each one of us! Even if you were the only person alive, He would still have sent His son, Jesus, to die a painful death on the cross for you.
For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten son that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. John 3:16.
This scripture is important to me. I had memorised it when I was a little girl and had recited it in front of my church congregation. So, I ‘knew’ Jesus had died for me from an early age. Many years later, the significance of this verse really impacted me. It went from being ‘head knowledge’ to ‘heart-felt’.
God pursues us relentlessly! He is passionate about us! He created us and He loves us with His father’s heart.
2. He has great plans for your life.
God knows everything about you! He created you to be exactly the way you are meant to be, with all of your quirks, passions, talents and abilities. He has gifted you with everything that you need to accomplish exactly what He has planned for you. And, they are great plans!
"For I know the plans I have for you," says the Lord. "They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope."
God often reminds me of this scripture. There have been many times where He has asked me to step out in faith and do something which is definitely out of my comfort zone. In these times I have clung to the hope I find in this verse.
3. Trust Him, He knows what is best.
God wants you to accomplish great things, to enjoy your life and be successful. You can trust Him to open the right doors and close the wrong ones. He will prompt you to take risks and try new things. Ask Him to direct your path and listen for His still, small voice; He knows the way!
Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek His will in all you do, and He will show you which path to take. Proverbs 3:5-6.
4. He uses ordinary people to do extraordinary things.
The book of Esther is one of my favourites; maybe because she was a girl! There are many things we can learn from this narrative. I think one of the most comforting things is that God is strategic and He can turn something that seems really awful into something that is beautiful. He can use whoever He wants to use to accomplish His plans and He loves to use ordinary people; like you and me!
Perhaps, this is the moment for which you were created. Esther 4:14.
5. He wants you to love Him with all of your heart.
God loves you more than you can even know or imagine, and, His greatest desire is for you love Him back. The Bible tells us that He is a jealous God and I believe this is because He knows that we can be easily distracted by things that take us away from what is best for us. If you Him first, seeking His will in everything that you do, He is faithful and He will look after you and your family.
As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord. Joshua 24:15.
6. Do not worry!
He wants to help you! He wants to hear from you! He does NOT want you to spend your time worrying about things that you can’t control or do anything about.
Don't worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank Him for all He has done. Then you will experience God's peace which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7.
When I was going through a challenging time a few years ago and I found myself starting to focus on my problems and losing hope, God reminded me of this scripture. He also prompted me to worship Him whenever I felt myself beginning to worry. My mantra became , and I still have it written on the mirror in my bedroom, ‘Don’t Worry, Worship’. So good!
7. Be strong and courageous!
We live in a broken world. Many unfair, devastating and tragic things happen; life is definitely not easy! However, God promises that He is ALWAYS with us and, for this reason, He calls us to not rely on our own strength and ability but to trust Him to provide His supernatural power to accomplish the great things that He has prepared for us.
"This is my command - be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go." Joshua 1:9.
Whenever you are faced with a task that seems really difficult or impossible; pray to Him and ask Him to help you. He will give you the words you need to use, or the wisdom to know how to progress. Ask Him, also, to give you His peace that surpasses all understanding.
8. Nothing is impossible for God!
He can do whatever He likes! Even when things seem impossible and as though nothing can be done in a situation, God has the ability and power (after all, He created everything!) to turn anything around. He might not always do it in the way we would hope and, we might not understand what He is doing, or His timing. However, He is in control and we can trust Him to always do what is best.
Jesus looked at them intently and said, "Humanly speaking, it is impossible. But with God everything is possible." Matthew 19:26.
We need to remember that God knows far more than we do. He knows the plans He has for the entire world, not just you and me. So, trust that He can do all things and will work everything out according to His will.
9. Holy Spirit will help you to become more like Jesus.
We are so blessed to live in these times! Jesus promised His disciples that He would send them Holy Spirit to live inside them. Holy Spirit continues to work in the lives of believers; helping them to become more like Jesus. We are called to be the hands and feet of Jesus and Holy Spirit provides inspiration, encouragement and guidance to accomplish God’s will on the earth. What a gift!
But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Galatians 5:22-23.
A wise person once said that you might be the only Bible that someone else will ever read. Ask Holy Spirit to help you to grow your fruit so that you are a true reflection of Jesus in the world.
10. God will help you to achieve great things for Him.
God has something specific that He wants each one of us to do for Him, to advance His kingdom. He has created you to do something that only YOU can do for Him. Ask Him to show you what His purpose is for your life. Follow His call and enjoy the ride. There is nothing more meaningful and fulfilling than doing the tasks that God has planned for you.
For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength. Philippians 4:13.
