Have you ever felt God prompting you to do something that just seems so illogical that it’s not funny? For me, it has happened countless times… However, this was a significant time and is actually how God finally got Matthew’s attention.
In 2012, our entire family was going to be either teaching or learning at Plenty Valley Christian College in Doreen, a suburb in the northern growth corridor of Melbourne. I had been employed at this school since the beginning of 2011 and loved it, and my whole family was joining me.
A move to a new home, near the school made sense; the houses in Doreen were newer and, being an outer suburb, the rent would be cheaper.
We found a beautiful four bedroom home about ten minutes away from the school and a short walk to the supermarket and main street.
We thought that it would be a great idea to move during the January school holidays after the stress of finishing a school year was over. However, I felt God impress upon me that He had other ideas. He wanted us to move before Christmas; the week before, in fact! Illogical (and stressful)!!!
We may throw the dice, but the LORD determines how they fall. Proverbs 16:33 (NLT)
So, we moved our stuff out on Thursday 23rd, we had the carpets cleaned on Friday 24th and spent Christmas day with my family in Lorne, Victoria. It was pretty hectic but we were happy to have moved so we could settle into our new home over the summer school holidays.
Do you recall the Christmas of 2011? I’m sure, if you live in Melbourne, you will remember the fierce storm that occurred on Christmas day at around 3pm.
We were blissfully unaware of the golf ball sized hail stones that ravaged Melbourne until it was reported on the nightly news. In fact, it had been a magnificent day in Lorne and we had spent time looking for shells on the beach in the afternoon.
On Boxing Day, we returned to Melbourne. On the way out to our new place in Doreen we had to call past our ‘old’ house to pick up a few things that had not fit into the moving van; several plastic containers filled with Jadzia’s precious books and our TV.
When we opened the garage door we got the shock of our lives; the house had been significantly damaged. There were massive holes in the covered patio roof and water had flooded the entire house. How lucky we were to have moved out BEFORE Christmas! God knew! You see, we didn’t have contents insurance and so, if we hadn’t have moved, we would have LOST most of our furniture.
As it turned out, Jadzia lost some books (which she is still not happy about!) and that is it. We had left the television, that hadn’t fit into the truck, sitting in the middle of the lounge room floor. However, amazingly, it was protected in its box with the polystyrene packaging elevating it above the water level. Thank you, Lord!
This event really demonstrated the PROVIDENCE OF GOD. In fact, after many years of Matthew hearing me say that God had told me to do something, this prompted him to say, “Hmmm, I think you really do hear from God!”
